Vulnerability Scanning That Finds the Holes First

Every Gap Has a Price on Its Head

Vulnerability scanning is automated testing that finds missing patches, weak settings and exposed services on your systems before attackers do. Endpoint Detectives includes vulnerability scanning in managed detection and response (MDR) at $150 per workstation per year, with findings explained in plain language.

What Is Vulnerability Scanning?

Vulnerability scanning is the automated process of checking computers, servers and network devices for known security weaknesses, such as unpatched software or risky configuration. A scan produces a list of findings ranked by severity so you can fix the worst first.

It is different from penetration testing. A scan finds known weaknesses at scale. A pen test is a person trying to break in.

Why Does Vulnerability Scanning Matter Now?

Vulnerability scanning matters because exploited vulnerabilities are now the top way attackers get in. The Verizon 2026 Data Breach Investigations Report ranked exploitation first among initial access vectors, at 31% of breaches.

31%

of breaches began with exploitation of a vulnerability, the top initial access vector. Source: Verizon 2026 DBIR.

26%

of critical vulnerabilities in the CISA KEV catalog were fully fixed, at a median of 43 days. Source: Verizon 2026 DBIR.

of vulnerabilities were exploited before public disclosure. Source: CrowdStrike 2026 Global Threat Report.

The KEV list is the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, vulnerabilities known to be used in real attacks.

What Happens After a Scan?

After a scan, the findings go to work. Our Security Operations Center (SOC) uses them to prioritize fixes, and you get a plain-language view of what to patch first and why.

  1. Scan covered systems for known weaknesses.
  2. Rank findings by severity and real-world exploitation.
  3. Explain the top fixes in plain language.
  4. Rescan to confirm the hole is closed.

The IBM Cost of a Data Breach Report 2026 listed offensive security testing, including vulnerability testing, as the top cost reducer, lowering average breach costs by $211,339.

Included in the MDR bundle

  • Vulnerability scanning
  • 24/7 SOC review
  • Endpoint detection and response (EDR) license
  • Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) log aggregation
  • Remote incident response

Vulnerability Scanning: FAQ

How often should you run vulnerability scans?

At least quarterly, and more often for internet-facing systems. Some rules set a floor: PCI DSS requires quarterly scans, and the FTC Safeguards Rule calls for assessments every six months without continuous monitoring.

Is vulnerability scanning the same as penetration testing?

No. Scanning is automated and finds known weaknesses. Penetration testing is a manual attack simulation. See our penetration testing services.

Does scanning slow down our systems?

Scans are designed to run with minimal disruption, and timing can be planned around your business hours.

Is vulnerability scanning included in the price?

Yes. It is one of eight inclusions in MDR at $150 per workstation per year, billed annually. No hidden fees.

What do we get after each scan?

Findings you can act on, and our SOC uses them in its monitoring. Questions about a specific finding? Call (866) 804-0645 or ask us.

What counts as a workstation?
