What Is a Cybersecurity Risk Assessment?

A cybersecurity risk assessment is a structured review of what you need to protect, what threatens it and how well your current controls hold up. It turns a vague worry into a ranked list of fixes.

It is the Identify step in the NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0, and the FTC cybersecurity guidance for small business recommends small businesses start there.

What Does the Template Cover?

The template covers eight areas. Each has yes or no questions, a 0 to 3 score and a space for the fix.

Endpoints

Is endpoint detection and response (EDR) on every laptop, desktop and server? Are patches current?

Accounts

Is multifactor authentication on for email, remote access and admins?

Network

Do you know every device connected? Are edge devices patched?

Cloud

Who has admin rights in email and file sharing? Are audit logs on?

Backups

Is there an offline copy? When did you last test a restore?

Detection

Who sees an alert at 2 a.m.? How fast do they act?

Response

Is there a written incident response plan with contacts?

Vendors

Which third parties can reach your systems?

How Do You Use the Template?

Use the template in four steps, ideally with whoever manages your IT.

  1. Print it or fill in the PDF.
  2. Answer each question honestly. Unknown counts as no.
  3. Score each area from 0 to 3.
  4. Fix the lowest-scoring areas first, starting with detection and accounts.
