What Is Penetration Testing?

Penetration testing is an authorized, simulated cyberattack in which a tester tries to break into your systems the way a criminal would, then reports what worked. It proves which weaknesses can actually be exploited, not just which ones exist.

That proof is valuable. The IBM Cost of a Data Breach Report 2026 ranked offensive security testing, which covers penetration and vulnerability testing, as the top factor lowering breach costs, by $211,339 on average.

What Kinds of Penetration Tests Exist?

Penetration tests are grouped by target. Most businesses start with an external network test and add others as risk and rules require.

External network test

Attacks your internet-facing systems the way an outsider would.

Internal network test

Assumes an attacker is already inside and tests how far they get.

Web application test

Probes your websites and portals for flaws like broken access control.

API test

Checks the interfaces your apps use to exchange data.

Social engineering test

Tests whether staff can be tricked into giving up access.

Cloud configuration review

Looks for exposed storage, weak identities and risky settings.

Which tests we run for you is set during scoping. Ask us about the type you need.

Who Needs a Penetration Test?

Businesses that handle payment cards, customer financial data or regulated data often need a penetration test, and every business with internet-facing systems benefits from one. Some rules set a schedule.

  • PCI DSS v4.0.1 requirement 11.4 calls for penetration testing at least annually.
  • The FTC Safeguards Rule, 16 CFR 314.4 requires annual penetration testing for covered financial institutions without continuous monitoring.
  • A proposed HIPAA Security Rule update would require annual pen tests. It is still proposed.

Penetration Testing Services: FAQ

How much does a penetration test cost?

It depends on scope. Stingrai's 2026 market benchmark puts small business programs at $8,000 to $20,000 per year.

Is penetration testing included in MDR?

No. Penetration testing is a separate, quoted service because every scope is different. Tap Get Protected to request a quote. Vulnerability scanning is included in Managed detection and response (MDR).

How long does a penetration test take?

Length depends on scope: the number of systems, applications and test types. Your quote spells out the timeline before work starts.

What do we get at the end?

A written report of what was tested, what was exploited, how serious each finding is and how to fix it.
